BlackBerry’s
6510 model improves on previous incarnations of BlackBerry
wireless handhelds by offering phone capabilities via a built-in
speaker and microphone, plus a handy long-range digital
walkie-talkie feature. Voice mail, a hands-free headset jack,
four methods of notification--tone, vibrate, on-screen, or LED
indicator, and a Push-to-Talk button for the walkie-talkie round
out the new phone offerings.
The 6510 operates on Nextel’s powerful digital network in the
United States at 800 MHz. Other wireless services that
BlackBerry users have become accustomed to—e-mail, Internet
access, calendar access, and SMS messaging--are still included,
making this handheld a complete business tool.
BlackBerry e-mail works with POP3 e-mail accounts and enterprise
e-mail accounts (such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino).
To use your BlackBerry with an enterprise e-mail account, you
can integrate using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server if your
company has one installed, or using the BlackBerry Deskstop
Redirector software included in the box.
With the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector, your computer must
remain turned on at all times to forward your e-mail messages.
If your company uses the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software,
you do not need to keep your computer turned on to forward your
e-mail messages.
The BlackBerry 6510 is powered by a 32-bit microprocessor and
uses an embedded RIM wireless modem. It offers 8 MB of flash
memory plus 1 MB of SRAM for storage. The thumb-operated
trackwheel and backlit QWERTY keyboard make messaging quick and
easy. The BlackBerry 6510 also has an easy-to-read screen with
an intuitive icon-based menu and a display that can be set by
the user to eight, 10, or 12 lines.
A keyboard lock and password protection are included for
security. BlackBerry Desktop Software is included to manage the
exchange between the user’s e-mail account on a desktop PC and
the 6510. The BlackBerry 6510 also comes with a USB cable for
charging and synchronizing with a PC and a travel charger.
This compact BlackBerry handheld measures 4.4 by 2.9 by 0.94
inches and weighs 5.8 ounces. Its rechargeable Lithium-ion
battery is rated at 165 minutes of talk time and 75 hours of
standby time.
