MemorySafe Backup Module for Palm V:

MemorySafe Backup Module for Palm VSheer panic grips the road-weary Palm user when the low-battery signal sounds and there's no power adapter or computer in sight. Well, sleep easy, restless traveler.

The Northstar Mobile Backup Memory Module--compatible with the Palm V handheld--stores up to 8 MB of data quickly without requiring a PC or an external power source. (Northstar also makes an 8 MB unit for the Palm III, VII, and m100 handhelds.)

The module uses flash memory to store data, so it only needs power during a backup or restore. Because the module uses the built-in connector, it runs at serial speeds--or just as fast as a regular computer-based synchronize-and-backup procedure. (It's quicker, actually, since it doesn't have to synchronize.)

It takes about two to three minutes to copy 1 MB worth of information. The module can back up from the Palm's RAM (which is erased when batteries run dry) or its flash memory, which remains intact even when powerless.

Using the module is literally a snap--just plug it firmly into the Palm handheld's bottom connector. The software, which is under 50 KB, comes on a Mac and PC readable CD-ROM. You add it to your Palm via the Palm Desktop's installer program.

When we clicked the M'Safe (MemorySafe) icon, we were presented with two choices: back up all files or select files to back up. We liked this option, as you can share one module among multiple Palms--such as in an office or a highly wired family-or you might want to choose only specific programs to back up.

We also found that if a program is already in the Memory Module, the device gives a warning that you're overwriting the existing data and offers to abort the task.

Restoring files was a breeze for us as well. We just clicked the Restore button, and the Backup All and Backup Files icons turned into Restore All and Restore Files.

In the event of the horrible Total Battery Empty condition, you can simply reinstall the M'Safe software and then enjoy quick restoration. Also, a system administrator could create a model Palm and then restore the data set to new Palms to reduce configuration time.

If you rely on your Palm as we do, the Northstar memory module is an invaluable insurance policy. Its low cost could even convince you to buy multiple units for extra backup convenience. (However, Northstar does note that one module has to be designated as your primary unit, and only that unit stores the critical address and datebook details.) --Glenn Fleishman
